For what it's worth, this is almost the exact opposite of the behavior of
Jabber on an Alpha running Red Hat Linux 7.0.  In that instance, you can
login in the first time and it creates the user file in the spool directory.
However, once you log out, it never lets you back in.  I don't know if there
is a clue there, but it sounded suspiciously similar...
