[JDEV] problem with spool directory

well, initially no... isn't that supposed to be created for you? Anyway,
I did try creating the directory manually but it didn't make a difference.
Since my original post I've decided to remove the 1.4 version that I got
from CVS and tried installing from the tarball available on jabber.org.
This version appears to work. However, I'm still having problems with
lagacy server interactions.
