[JDEV] Communication Between Different Versions

We are trying to get one server running with jabber-1.2 to talk to a server running either 1.0 or 1.4. In both cases, we've had no success. Are there any special modifications required in the jabber.xml files? 

The each server's debug mode displays <error 502, remote server error>. Furthermore, the 1.2 server keeps checking users for host update.jabber.org, as well as host "the other server". Shouldn't it only be monitoring the users on its own server?

We're running WinJab and both clients can "see" each other. However, we cannot send subscriptions, or messages to each other.
