It was to do with international subscribers. Take the US out of the
equation, and MSN apparently now has more users (although I question whether
AIM was the biggest player anyway. iCQ has always seemed bigger, in Europe
at least). AIM benefits in US from the huge AOL membership, which is not
matched in the rest of the world to the same extent.
