That seems like a better way for it to work, but I never got it to
work that way. The only way I can ever get the server to send me any
kind of presence information is to send it the probes. Otherwise,
the only presence messages I get are when someone on my roster
disconnects. Is there any kind of documentation out there with an
example of how this is supposed to work? (Yes, I read the JPG
already.)

The server does "presence pushes". That is, it stores presence for
all ppl. When your client starts, you have to send an initial
presence. If you do so, the server will automatically send you the
presence of all online ppl on your roster to whom you are subscribed.
After all, this is the purpose of subscription!!

You then are supposed to have a small "database" and remember for
each user his online status. This is how all clients I know by source
(Gabber, Winjab, Jabbernaut) do it...

Bye,

Max
