The server does "presence pushes". That is, it stores presence for 
all ppl. When your client starts, you have to send an initial 
presence. If you do so, the server will automatically send you the 
presence of all online ppl on your roster to whom you are subscribed. 
After all, this is the purpose of subscription!!

You then are supposed to have a small "database" and remember for 
each user his online status. This is how all clients I know by source 
(Gabber, Winjab, Jabbernaut) do it...
