I can't be sure, but chances are you are using the out-of-the-box html
file, which probably specifies something like jabber.org as the server.
Applet security in browsers will prevent you from opening a socket with
any machine with a different hostname from where the page was grabbed.

Just a guess. You would probably want to open up your browser's Java
console to see if there are any exceptions being thrown.
