I chatted with Jer and i think there is a better solution in the wind.
This is an issue which covers others wanting anon sessions for things
like customer service and web chat stuff.
It seems that for 1.4 there will be a new transport for
anonymous/transient users (this will work in the same way that pthsock
handles authenticating i suspect).
