[JDEV] Connecting to the server.

I just installed jabber-1.0.1 and cannot get it to connect. I used IPTraf
and determined that there is traffic to the server, but WinJab reports:

Attempting to Connect to 198.140.216.36...
COMM ERROR: Socket Error Code 10054 (10054)
Pausing 5 secs. before reconnect Attempt
Disconnected from Server!

In the Debug window:
SENT: <stream:stream to="198.140.216.36" xmlns="jabber:client"
xmlns:stream="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams">
RECV: <?xml version='1.0'?><stream:stream
xmlns:stream='http://etherx.jabber.org/streams' id='39EE2FED'>
SENT: <iq type="set" id="JCOM_226"><query
xmlns="jabber:iq:auth"><username>ted</username><password>xxxxxxxx</password>
<resource>Work</resource></query></iq>

Could it be that something (jserver?) tries to connect to jabber.org and
can't (we're behind a firewall)?

I want this to work without connecting to jabber.org, completely
autonomously behind the firewall is this possible?

Oh, one other thing: why does it send passwords in the clear over the net?
