I was hoping to be there by now, due to <insert miscellaneous reasons here>
I'm not.
I have an applet GUI that I'm integrating with various APIs as they move
along. My goal is to have something cross platform, light weight, doesn't
require browser addons,,, (therefore using AWT vs Swing, minimal/no
graphics, input color params, minimal button usage,,,)

You'd think that there would be :)
My code (java-mass, now jabberbeans, at
http://jabberbeans.sourceforge.net) is coming along quickly, I am
debugging a few issues with receiving messages now. It is the API though,
not a client - but I plan to get some clients up while debugging, after
the basic send/receive stuff works. (I practically have a console-based
client now)
There are also some other efforts going on around, but nothing released
yet.
