I think it's a useful fiction, though. For one, _we_ know it isn't
blocked, and it's probably best that Jabber doesn't show up high enough on
AOL's radar that they decide to go to the necessary effort. From a
political standpoint, however, the idea that AOL is blocking
indiscriminately adds to the pressure they're under to open their service.
Should we make it clear that Jabber is still interoperating with AIM, then
AOL _must_ try to block it or face the accusation that their reasons for
blocking MS, et al, are bogus and have little to do with protecting users,
but rather jockeying for absolute control of the IM space. If Jabber keeps
a lower profile, then it can improve its operability while the debate
rages, and in the event that AOL is forced to open its service, then Jabber
can vie to have the best interoperability.
In the meantime, we're all able to talk to Tom Bender's aunt, which is all
that really matters for the moment.
