[JDEV] libjabber.so.1: cannot open shared object file

I followed the mini-HOWTO:

Installed pth, ADNS, libxode, libjabber, libetherx and jabber-transport (in that
order, with ldconfig between each install). jserver.xml looks good to go.

When I attempt to run jserver, I get the following:

[root at pluto jabber]# jserver: error in loading shared libraries:
libjabber.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

libjabber.so.1 is clearly in /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/lib is in the global
PATH, so what am I doing wrong??
(Same results on both RH6.1 and Mandrake 7.0)
