I'd say there other reasons as well. But that's the main one. For instance, administrators can currently use the undocumented jabber:iq:admin to get information on who's connected, how long they've been connected, the amount of packets being sent, etc. Since this info is being viewed remotely through Jabber, I would say that SSL would be a good choice for this type of stuff.
