FYI I have put together a page documenting soft limits of this sort
and how to raise them; see
http://www.kegel.com/c10k.html#limits.filehandles
I'm quite interested in Jabber benchmarks; the Volano chat
benchmark has been a good one for Java, and I'd like to
see a similar one for C++.
Have you resolved your problems? Can you post source and/or results?
BTW, my ftp benchmark (http://www.kegel.com/dkftpbench/)
and its results (http://www.kegel.com/dkftpbench/results.html)
might be of some small interest to you for comparison.
