A) It's possible to get more than 1000 users connected at the same time with
2.2 kernels.

B) As a long time Linux user (.9 or so) and occasional Linux kernel hacker, I
would suggest that the 2.4 test kernels are generally extremely stable. I
have routinely upgraded to the latest alpha server on certain of my servers
for several years. Large problems do not last very long in kernel releases.
While a particular point release might happen to be bad for your purposes, it
is very unlikely. There are many features and drivers that make up a Linux
kernel and a prerelease kernel is always stable for most of those.

Unless you are going to put machines or CD's out for general purpose use, it
doesn't make sense to avoid testing and possibly certifying a total system
that has known better features and performance.

2.4 has many man years of scalability work over 2.2. It also has a number of
new interfaces to improve I/O capability. Some experiments with the scheduler
and other areas have made it perform poorer in some situations, but the end
result is usually an improvement.
