I told myself I'd stay out of the rest of this discussion, but now I'm going
to briefly break my word:

As a (very) occasional client developer, I like this.  One of most beautiful
things about Jabber, from the client programmer's perspective, is the design
philosophy that all the tough stuff should happen on the server.  It makes
developing and maintaining a client a cinch.
