Well, it's got to be measurable, though it may be that
nobody actually measures it. AOL's servers touch every
message that flow through them. It wouldn't be too tough
for them to count which messages contain text formatting
(bold, italics, etc.) while the messages are passing
through, at least for a subset of the messages. I'd be
surprised if they haven't done such studies already. If
I were at AOL, I would, as a way of better understanding
my customers.
