hell right now, along with sporadic power/connectivity over the last day)

  Quick answer, no purpose at all.  Most clients would end up populating the 
state as online, with a hidden 'flag' somehow.  Offline works for the purpose.  
Why would I want to broadcast that I was hiding? ;-P
