Some of the confusion may be due to the different paradigms Jabber and AIM,
ICQ, et al use. In AIM, you have a single virtual server that everyone
connects to--fault tolerance is provided by the central service provider.

Jabber works more like email (SMTP+POP). You connect to a server, which
then has the smarts or the access to the smarts to deilver your messages.
If your local email server is down and you no longer have access to it for
weeks on end, aren't you similarly stuck?
