Partially interleaved response.
I like this "typing" solution a bit over the first idea. However, I have a
few comments/issues/ideas I'd love to add too. ;)
I would note the */chat might cause some weirdnesses with MIME extensions,
but nothing that couldn't be handled by an intelligent client.

First off, I don't see where a difference between group/chat and single/chat
is. The display, if done in the way it's "normally" done, is exactly the
same. That said, I still like the typing method because it conveys
handy information.

Something like "layout" or "layout-hint"? The first has the advantage of
shortness the latter of being more accurate.
