I don't like this because it forces every client to remember another piece
of state for every person who sends it a message. And this would have to
be permanent state, because the sender has no way of knowing when the
reciever has quit or restarted his client. Is that (minor) extra
complexity worth the (even more minor) savings of ~20 bytes per message? I
don't think so.
