It is, in fact, being considered. I just spoke to Thomas Charron a few
days ago on #jabber about this very thing. Note: I wasn't presenting
a new idea to him, there were already discussions under way about
it. Jer has even mentioned that before a 1.0 release most development
discussion would be held through Jabber clients (most likely using an
IRC transport). From the looks of it, this transport will be relatively
painless compared to some of the other work they are doing.
Believe it or not there are some really bright and forward-thinking
developers hammering away at this project. I imagine when the
holidays are over that the site will be updated with all the new
information (including a complete revised protocol spec).
