I don't see why not either.  We can easily extend the messaging 
capabilities with the MIME standard.  It's already been proven, and there 
are tons of pre-made libraries for parsing and handling MIME.  It adds 
negligable overhead (just Boundary: blah---- and Content-encoding: foo/bar).
I really don't see what is wrong with this.  If you don't want friends 
sending you stuff, just tell em.  Anyway, it would be easy to send all 
MIME messages as several messages.  The plain text part would come first, 
then you could cancel any subsequent ones you want (Foo is sending you an 
Elephant.attach, do you accept?).

Why wouldn't there be?  First of all you would have to accept the 
download, and then play the file.  Anyway, why would your friends send 
you random junk if they knew you hated it?

Well, the solution is simple.  Don't make Jabber buddies with lamers.  
I usually don't get email with active content and stuff because I simply 
do not know anybody who would think it would be great to send me that 
type of stuff.
